Abstract

The impact of SARS-CoV-2 severe acute respiratory syndrome is highlighted, with special emphasis on the renal system, evidenced by glomerulonephritis and acute kidney injury. A specific case of a 5-year-old girl with SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19 and post-infectious glomerulonephritis is described. The expression of ACE2 receptors in the kidney is highlighted, making it a vulnerable organ to infection. The findings of several studies showing the presence of hematuria, proteinuria and renal lesions in patients with COVID-19 are discussed, as well as the association between renal disease and increased mortality. An algorithm is proposed to identify patients at increased risk of developing severe disease, based on renal markers such as hematuria, leukocyturia and albuminuria/proteinuria, together with antithrombin III and albumin levels. The importance of monitoring renal function in patients with COVID-19 and addressing its management in a comprehensive manner, considering the increased risk of complications and mortality associated with renal involvement.
